Attributes of Effective Teachers

I think one of my colleagues has assigned our students to query teachers about what makes an "effective teacher." (GREAT assignment, in my mind.) Several of my former Intro to Education students have contacted me today asking me about my thoughts on this.

One student framed the question this way: "Would you be able to send me a list of 10 words that effective teachers should possess? Preferably in order from most important to least."

So I did. (Sucker that I am...)

Here's my list of key attributes for effective teachers:

  1. Loving
  2. Patient
  3. Kind
  4. Knowledgeable
  5. Creative
  6. Reflective
  7. Enthusiastic
  8. Flexible
  9. Caring
  10. Humble
What do you think? Did I capture the essence of effective teaching here? What did I leave out? Would you change the order?

This got me thinking...I gave a presentation on this topic in Intro to Ed last semester. Here's the Prezi I used to introduce the topic: (Caveat: if you're prone to feeling seasick with Prezi, this one might get you...I deliberately used a lot of swooping and zooming as an example of what not to do in their own presentations that they would give later in class--this was my exemplar for them.)

What do you think? What makes an effective teacher so effective?
